How to Get to Puerto Escondido

Are there direct flights to Puerto Escondido?

How far is the airport from Casa Leah?

How do you get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido?
By road, on the new highway that opened in 2024 between Oaxaca City and Ventanilla, about 13 km from Puerto Escondido. The drive now takes roughly two and a half to three hours. Before it opened, the winding mountain route could take as long as seven.
First-class buses also run from Oaxaca City, and the small planes of Aerotucán and Aerovega make the crossing in a fraction of the time, with the Sierra Madre del Sur passing below the wing.
Can you fly into Huatulco instead?
You can. Bahías de Huatulco has its own airport about 120 km away, roughly two hours by the coastal highway. It is a reasonable option if the flight times suit you better, or if you would like to stop in Mazunte on the way.
There is no direct bus between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, so a car or private transfer is the practical choice.
Flying from the United States and Canada
United's nonstop from Houston and American's from Dallas/Fort Worth have made Puerto Escondido far easier to reach than it was a few years ago. Canadian travelers have seasonal service from Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary during the dry months.
From other North American cities, the usual path is a connection through Mexico City or Guadalajara, with a short domestic hop to the coast. Plan for immigration and customs at your first point of entry into Mexico.
When should you book your flight?
For Christmas, New Year and Easter week, book early: there are only a handful of flights into PXM each day, and they fill quickly. The same is true of July and August, when Mexican families travel.
September and October bring more room on the planes and in town. If a little late-afternoon rain does not trouble you, it is the most unhurried time to arrive.
Getting around Puerto Escondido
- Taxis are plentiful and the easiest way between Zicatela, Carrizalillo, Rinconada and the town center.
- On foot: from Casa Leah, Zicatela Beach is 47 steps away, and a walk along the sand brings you to La Punta.
- Scooter or rental car: useful for days at Chacahua, Mazunte or the Manialtepec lagoon.

Finding Casa Leah
We are at Calle Framboyanes 11, Brisas de Zicatela, 70934 Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The entrance is on Av. del Morro, between Guayacán and Vista al Mar.
Check-in begins at 3:00 pm and check-out is until 12:00 pm. If you land early, you can ask for early check-in, subject to availability. Reception is open from 7 am to 11 pm; let us know your arrival time.
There is no on-site parking. Free street parking is available just outside.
